The Project
We were asked to support a commercial client in Fenton, Stoke on Trent who was relocating units on site. As part of the move, they needed a new area prepared for a waste compactor.
While the installation itself was straightforward, the existing space was not suitable. The area needed to be properly cleared, stabilised and built up to create a solid base that could support the equipment.
This is a good example of the type of enabling works that often sit behind the scenes on commercial sites but play a key role in keeping projects moving.
The Challenge
The area identified for the compactor was not immediately usable.
It included soft ground and a section of hedge that restricted access. Without proper preparation, installing the compactor would have led to long term issues around stability and usability.
The client needed a solution that would create a durable and practical space while fitting in with the existing layout of the site.
The Work Carried Out
Our team completed the full preparation of the area, turning it into a clean and stable base ready for installation.
The work included:
• Removing a section of hedge to open up the space
• Excavating the ground to around 450mm to remove unsuitable material
• Installing 150mm of MOT to form a solid sub base
• Pinning into the existing slab to tie the new area into the structure
• Shuttering and pouring 200mm of reinforced concrete
Each stage was completed with a focus on creating a strong, long lasting foundation that would support the compactor and withstand regular use.
The Outcome
Once complete, the site had a clean, level and reinforced concrete area ready for the compactor to be installed.
The client was able to move forward with their plans without delay, knowing the base had been prepared properly.
The Bigger Picture
This was not a large scale project, but it highlights the importance of enabling works in practice.
A lot of work on commercial and construction sites happens at this early stage. It often goes unseen, but it is critical in making sure everything that follows can run smoothly.
Taking a space that is not quite usable and turning it into something practical and ready for use is where a lot of value is created.
