Overview

Sixtowns Waste recently completed a restricted access site clearance in Crewe, removing approximately 30 tonnes of soil and a van load of mixed construction waste from the rear of a terraced property.

On paper, the job was straightforward. The material needed removing and the space needed clearing.

The real challenge was access.

The waste was located at the back of a terraced property, down a long narrow alley, with busy roads surrounding the site. Several other companies had already looked at the job and said it was too difficult.

Our role was to find a safe and practical way to get the material off site without relying on the obvious options.

Project Details

Client: HMO property developer
Location: Crewe, Cheshire
Project type: Restricted access site clearance
Waste removed: Approximately 30 tonnes of soil and one van load of mixed construction waste
Main challenge: Long narrow rear access with no straightforward grab or skip access
Outcome: Waste removed and space cleared as planned

The Brief

The customer had been worried about the waste for several weeks.

The material had built up at the rear of the property and needed removing before the space could be properly used again.

The scope included:

• Removing approximately 30 tonnes of soil
• Clearing a van load of mixed construction waste
• Working from the rear of a terraced property
• Managing difficult access through a long narrow alley
• Finding a safe and efficient method to move the material off site

The job required more planning than a standard clearance because a grab wagon could not simply pull alongside the waste and load directly.

The Challenge

The biggest issue was not the amount of waste. It was how to get it out.

The waste was positioned at the rear of a terraced property with limited access and busy surrounding roads.

This ruled out the simplest options and meant the job needed a more considered approach.

The main challenges included:

• Long narrow access route
• Restricted working space
• No direct grab access to the waste
• Busy nearby roads
• Large volume of heavy material
• Need to keep the job moving safely and efficiently

This is often where site clearance becomes more than just loading waste. The logistics matter just as much as the clearance itself.

The Method

To overcome the access issue, we used a digger to load a 7.5 tonne lorry at the rear of the property.

The soil was then shuttled out from the rear access to a nearby road, where a grab lorry could unload the material.

This method allowed us to move the soil efficiently without needing direct grab access to the rear of the property.

Once the soil had been cleared, enough space was created to get the van into position and remove the remaining mixed construction waste.

The clearance method involved:

• Loading soil with a digger
• Using a 7.5 tonne lorry to shuttle material out
• Coordinating with a grab lorry at a nearby road
• Clearing enough space to access the remaining waste
• Removing mixed construction waste by van

Apart from a track snapping on the digger, the job was completed as planned.

Site Clearance and Logistics

This project is a good example of why planning matters on site clearance jobs.

Not every site has easy access for skips, grab lorries or larger vehicles. Terraced properties, rear gardens, narrow alleys and busy roads can all make a simple clearance much more complicated.

In this case, the solution was not one single vehicle or method. It required a combination of plant, shuttle movement and grab collection.

By breaking the job down properly, we were able to remove the waste in a controlled and practical way.

The Outcome

The waste was removed and the rear space was fully cleared.

The customer was relieved to finally see the material gone after worrying about the job for several weeks.

By finding a workable clearance method, we were able to complete a job that several other companies had considered too difficult.

The project helped:

• Remove approximately 30 tonnes of soil
• Clear the remaining mixed construction waste
• Resolve a long-standing issue for the customer
• Make the rear area usable again
• Demonstrate a practical solution to a difficult access problem

Why This Project Matters

It is not always the volume of waste that makes a site clearance difficult.

Sometimes the real work is in the access, logistics and planning.

This Crewe project shows the importance of looking beyond the obvious option and finding a method that actually works for the site.

For developers, landlords, contractors and property owners, restricted access does not always mean a job cannot be done. It just means the clearance needs to be planned properly.
