6 facts about Grab Lorries

Grab lorries are one of the most popular choices of waste collection solutions in the construction industry due to their ability to remove large amounts of material quickly and easily. Grab lorries can be hired out for individual jobs making them even more convenient.

We’re big fans of grab lorries at Sixtowns Waste, which is why we’ve written this short guide featuring 6 facts you might not know about grab lorries or grab hire.

Grab Lorry

Muck shifting on site

Grab lorries carry a lot of waste.

Grab lorries have a maximum weight of 32 tonnes, this means on average a grab lorry can move up to 16 tonnes of your waste at a time which is about the same as two builders skips.

Grab lorries are fast. Really fast!

Most grabs can be in and out in 15 mins or so, this is perfect if you’re on a busy construction site or have restricted access.

The mechanical arm is the game changer hear, no more breaking your back to load up a skip.

Speed and convenience are the biggest bonuses of grab hire in our opinion, this feature keeps your projects ticking over and helps to make sure you can meet your deadlines.

Permit? What permit?

If you haven’t got a driveway or any other piece of private property to put a skip, you’ll need to get a permit from the council. This is both slow and expensive, not exactly the sort of thing you want to add to your construction project.

Grab lorries are road legal and taxed, meaning they can park up anywhere near to your site and crack on with the muck away.

Grab lorries are available in all shapes and sizes.

Well, maybe not shapes but you can defiantly get different sized grab lorries depending on the conditions of your site.

If access is particularly tight a smaller 4-wheeled grab lorry may be a better option. These can only carry 10 tonnes, but they can fit into smaller areas and are even quicker to load than their 8-wheeled big brothers.

Grab lorries can reach hard to access areas.

Wall or fence blocking access to your waste? Not a problem for a grab lorry, with their 8-meter long arm a grab lorry can easily reach over most fences or hedges to get your waste.

The arm works from the side of the lorry so that the machine is safely supported whilst loading by its outriggers.

Grab lorries recycle your waste.

Whether you're disposing of muck or clean concrete and rubble, the waste that’s collected from your site with a grab lorry can be recycled into useful materials.

This could be recycled aggregates such as 6F2 or MOT, or used to make screeded topsoil.
