When you hire a skip how long can you keep it for?
One of the most common questions we get asked is how long you can keep a skip once you hire it, as with most things it depends on a couple of factors. This short guide will give you an idea of how long you can hire a skip for and will help you out with some tips and tricks so you can get your skip filled as quickly as possible.
Location, location, location.
The biggest factor in how long you can hire a skip depends on where you want to put it. If it is going on your drive or somewhere else on private property, then it is up to the skip hire company how long you can hire it for. If you need to put the skip on a road or other area of public land you’ll have to get a permit. This permit will expire after a set length of time, usually 5-7 days but this will vary from council to council. Generally, the company you are hiring the skip from will get this permit for you so check with them before you hire. You can find more details about permits on the government website.
If the skip is going on your property, then check with the skip hire firm how long you can hire it for, most companies allow a hire period of 7-14 days. They may offer longer hire periods for repeat customers or if you ask them beforehand. Most companies will probably allow a few extra days without charge if you agree up front however some may charge extra for a longer hire. It’s important to check this and agree to terms before you hire.
Speeding up.
You may be thinking that you don’t actually want a tatty old skip sat on the drive longer than you need to anyway! Don’t worry, these tips will help you fill your skip as quickly as possible so you can get back to normal ASAP.
Timing- Try to arrange your delivery at the start of a period where you have time to fill the skip, having it dropped on a Friday or Saturday morning is a great option as it gives you the weekend to crack on.
Prepare- Have your waste sorted and in an organised pile ready to be chucked in, if you’ve got rubble or soil, having it in rubble bags makes loading it into the skip much easier and quicker. Having wheelbarrows and other material handling equipment ready before the skip is delivered can also help speed things up.
Get some muscle- Having an extra pair of hands can massively speed up the loading process. Maybe you could bribe your kids with some sweets or your mates with a couple of beers to get them to help you load up.
Advanced booking- Don’t wait until the skip is filled to book a collection. It might take the hire company a couple of days to collect so give them advanced notice while you finish off loading.
